how to have a healthy kid?

Being a parent is not really an easy task especially today that we have economic crisis not only in Austria but the whole world as well. If there is some difficulty in budgeting then most probably the health of the kids are also affected because the quality of food might not be given so much importance. What are the best way to avoid malnutrition or stay fit all the time? (picture courtesy of Flickr)

  • Eat nutritious food which are not expensive like grains, fruits, vegetables, milk or dairy products, meat, beans and fish. Since meat is so expensive and our body needs few of those, it is a better substitute to eat more fruits and vegetables or dairy products. Kids are always active then they need more calories which can be found from common grain foods such as slice of bread, cereal or oatmeal, rice, pasta. And to have a strong bones, our kids need a lot of calcium as well. If you think that milk is so expensive then substitute yogurt or cheese. Iron is also a vital vitamin for our kids and peanut butter has lot of it. If you think egg is so expensive then try cooked dry beans.
  • Exercise. Well, every kid do it all the time without noticing it. Running, biking, playing.
  • Drink a lot of water. Limit sugary drinks such as juice, cola, soda.
  • Avoid too much time watching TV or video, playing nintendo. The more time kids spend on electronics stuff the less time to be active outdoor.
  • Be active and do not give stress to your kids.
Being a fit kid means having a fit parents also!

what is stomach flu?

M was hospitalized yesterday because he had a stomach pain. It was not just a normal stomach pain because M shouted and cried so loud and began to chill. It was diagnosed as stomach flu or the so called gastroenteritis. For your extra knowledge, it is a viral infection that attacks the stomach and small intestine. The stomach flu can be transmitted when we swallow one of the virus. The infected person can spread it through shaking hands or kissing, or food sharing, drinking, or using the utensils of the infected person. How come M had a tremendous pain? Because the virus travels to the stomach and intestine and cause inflammation of the lining. The signs and symptoms of the stomach flu are stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. It typically last for 3 to 4 days and there is no vaccines for it. If your kid has a fever then just give a normal medicine that will reduce it. Stomach flu can have serious side effects particularly in infants and children. Make sure to give special attention when you need it.

how to cure body odor?

I still remember the time that my youngest kid told us about his first school day. During the first week, he told us that he had a delicious lunch and enjoy what he is doing in the school. Until one day having our dinner, we accidentally asked him about his classmate. (Picture courtesy of Flickr)

M : I don't like the kid sitting beside me. (so serious and sad)
Mom: Why?
Dad: Did he do something bad to you?
J: Tell it to me and he will get something....(acting like an action star ha ha ha).
M: Ahmmm...I don't like him to sit beside me because he smell so bad. (Ang baho nya waaaaaaa)

We all laughed and could not imagine how M seriously said his problem. If your kid has a body odor and trying to cure it then first find some reason how come some kids or people have it?

Perspiration is one of the cause of body odor. If the person has imbalances in metabolism then it will result in stronger odors. We have to be aware that the toxins around us can cause some body odor and you can find it in your home, food and air as well. Those toxins can be accumulated to our body and when the organ that has to dispose them could not function accurately then the liver and intestines maybe clogged up, causing body odor. When it is the problem, then there are some herbal medicines that could cure or eliminate the toxins in our body which is called detoxification.

If your body cannot metabolize foods such as eggs, fish, liver and legumes then avoid to eat too much of it. Do you know that garlic, onions, curry, spicy foods, coffee and alcohol are the primary cause of body odor? Do you know that fatty and oily foods can contribute also to the problem? Avoid them or do not eat too much of the said foods.

Next time I will discuss some tips on how to get rid of body odor. Kindly give some points also by leaving your comments. Thanks.

you shout! do you care?

I just read that shouting is healthy specially for a women. Do you know that women who have the ability to be silent all the time even there are some problems at home could experience 4 times the risk of dying compared with women who voice out their feelings. It was found out that the stress hormone levels of those women who keep their problem inside their heart rather than letting it out or shout it out could be the most affected part of their body. However, men who has no control of their temper has a greater risk of having a stroke. So, to all men at home, like me ha ha ha, control your temper! The moral lesson is 'be constructive in expressing your feelings'. How? Click here. (picture courtesy of Flickr)

AQUARIUM as stress prevention! (#3)

This is the vital part of having an aquarium. I guess you had time to read the part 1 & part 2 before concentrating about the third part which is CLEANING. The challenge for me is this part because it will really detect your ability to have an aquarium. Cleaning is the hardest and the most fulfilling part coz it will help you to develop more patience and be able to work-out your stress problem. Having a hobby aquarium needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of your time to clean every single part of it. (**photo courtesy of Flickr)

What are the things needed to clean?
  • old toothbrush
  • pail
  • dipper
  • roll paper
  • old newspaper
Steps on how to clean your aquarium:
  • Use an old newspaper to cover the floor to avoid dirt while cleaning.

  • Unplug everything that give electricity to avoid accident.

  • Uncover the aquarium.
  • Get the empty clean pail, be sure it is really clean, wash thoroughly to avoid death of fish. Start reducing the water inside the aquarium using the dipper. Stop when it is halfway.
  • Remove all the things inside excluding the stone or sand and fishes.
  • Clean the inside part of the glass using old toothbrush and wipe it with roll paper.
  • Reduce again the water until it is only 2 inches above the stone or sand. Check the lowest side of the glass if it is really clean. Use again the tooth brush to get rid of all the dirt.
  • Get at least half of the sand(only sand or stone) and quickly wash it(just plain water!) until it shows to be really clear and clean.
  • Return all the stone or sand, be careful not to hurt your fish.
  • Pour water until the original height has been reached.
  • Add again your liquid solution that will make the water suitable for the fish.
  • Go back to all the gadgets including decor, plastic plants etc. Clean it thoroughly. Give importance to your filter machine. It should be really clean!
  • Place all the gadgets, decor including the filter and heater in its proper place.
  • Clean the cover of the aquarium using the roll paper again. Place it to its proper position.
  • Plug all the electric parts of the aquarium like lights, heater and filter.
Easy!? Definitely not! But do not worry, it is a matter of experience and patience. Once you love it and admit to yourself that it is a part of your life then everything will be EASY!

Do not use any liquid solution in cleaning. JUST PLAIN WATER!!!

AQUARIUM as stress prevention! (#2)

Having an idea already on how to start and to prepare the materials needed to have a hobby aquarium, then the next step will be buying the right fish for it. How & What?

How?

Before buying the right fish, it is important to stabilize first the water. Be sure to buy a liquid solution that will make the water suitable for fish. You have to switch ON the filter that give oxygen and absorbed the dirt for at least two weeks. Then you are ready now for...

What?

Because you are a starting to enjoy an aquarium, then it is my tip not to buy an expensive fish. I will recommend a goldfish, for those who really have no time to clean regularly or change the water weekly. Goldfish is usually called coldwater fish because it can be placed in an unheated aquarium. Changing every week at least 1/4 of the water is not really needed when you have a goldfish. I have been enjoying my aquarium for almost 8 years and tried different fish but goldfish is not so sensitive comparing to other one and you do not have to clean the aquarium for maximum of 2 months.

Enjoy preparing your fish, next time I will share some tips on how to properly clean it and some materials needed in cleaning.

AQUARIUM as stress prevention!

If you think that you can not avoid stress in your life and tried every possible solution like medication, massage, etc. Then try also to have a personal AQUARIUM at home. Some people put it at the living room as an additional decor but my wife and myself decided to place it in our bedroom and the result is really positive. Having more or less 8 hours work daily and doing some household jobs, hmmmm, it could be really a tough day and to mention that we have kids also, it is really not a question to relax and meditate sometimes or even before going to bed. But you have to ask first yourself if you can take care an aquarium? It is not like an electronic machine that you just switch on/off every time that you want. (**photo courtesy of Flickr)

I will focus today on what are the materials that you need. If you are a first timer and really zero knowledge on how to start it then buy first a 'hobby aquarium set'. It is a 60 liter aquarium with filter machine and automatic heater included. For your decor, you have to buy some sand, plastic ornaments, dry wood or big stone and some aquarium figures like castle or mermaid or anything that will attract your taste. Buying the complete set of hobby aquarium plus some cheap decor will need a budget of more or less Euro 70.

Addicted to beer?

How come it is Dad's or even male adult's habit to drink a bottle of beer while eating specially during dinner and sometimes while watching TV? I just found out that a bottle of beer has 145 calories, therefore drinking a bottle in a week could give you 1,015 calories. How about in a year then?

Do not ask me why you can not get rid of your fat belly!

If ....

1. You have skin fungal infections then Ringworm Bush is a good herbal medicine for it. If your kid has a ringworm, that can be used as a treatment also.

2. You have a high sugar (diabetec) then cook some Bitter Melon as a replacement to your insulin treatment.

3. You have cholesterol problem then Garlic is the best solution to your problem.

4. Your kid has tooth decay or gum infection, then Guava leaves can cure it as a herbal medicine.

5. You feel that the cough or asthma of your kid is getting worse everytime, then try a herbal medicine like 5-leaved chaste tree.

6. You like to relieve the body aches & pain then try the peppermint vine as analgesic which is also a herbal medicine.

7. Your kid has a cold, cough, fever & sore throat then try the Ginger Root as a remedy. It can cure also rheumatism and muscle pain.

8. You have urinary tract infections or bladder infections then try Hibiscus as another medicinal plants to cure it.

9. You like to prevent cancer or tumor then Aloe Vera can be tried. Aloe vera is also anti oxidant whichs prevent oxidation of certain fats and gene cells.

If you have time and enough space in your garden then try to plant some of those and who knows it might help some problem with your kids or all of us who like herbal medicine.

Giving stress to your kids is not healthy, why?

Ever been asking why your kids have stomach pain? How about trouble in sleeping? And the worst terrible headache? Being a parent, it might not be good if our kids are sick. But we found out that stomach pain, trouble in sleeping and headache are symptoms of 'KID'S STRESS'. Kids can be stressed, HOW & WHY?

1. Having too much report, assignment and exams in school
2. Anxiety in reading a report in the class
3. Witnessing parents fighting for something at home
4. Experiencing the burden of a sick brother or sister at home
5. Being upset for something
6. Showing bad attitude to your kids
7. Parents divorce
8. Death of a loved one

How to avoid stress for kids?

1. If your kid feels like tired and stressed because of too much going on, let him/her drop something even for a semester.
2. Teach your kid the relaxation exercise like inhaling & exhaling slowly.
3. Being a parent, balance your life. Learn how to spend your time with the kids.
4. Have FUN with your kids.
5. Avoid blaming your kids too much.

Being a parent is not really an easy task but it could be easier if our kids stay as healthy as possible. Smile!

How to cure a kid's weak lungs!

Since birth M has a weak lungs and he was even hospitalized at the age of 3 months and was given an antibiotic, sad to remember coz it was administered through vein. The needle was inserted to his vein just to have an immediate medication coz he was really in a bad condition. Every 2 months we should hospitalize him coz it was getting worse. Until it took almost 1 yr that we decided to bring him in Philippines, thingking that M might recover from 'needle stigma'. Maybe he needs fresh air & food, enough space and lots of time playing outside. Because living in a condo in Vienna has also a disadvantage for kids especially when it is cold season. Heating can cause dryness of the air we breath and it is usually not good for kids with weak lungs like M. Luckily, we have our real home (Batangas) and have a nice sea where you can enjoy swimming and having fun underneath the sun. After 1 year of almost daily visiting the sea, just having a quick dip, walking in the morning with yaya H plus some vitamins to have healthy lungs, M did not even have antibiotics for a year.

Now, M is enjoying his life in Vienna, not anymore experiencing the 'needle stigma'.

Why do you like to reduce? The answer? 'Bora'

New year's eve 2008! One of my new year's resolution is to exercise and be fit. Why?! The answer is one word 'Bora'! But it is just one of the reasons, to be honest, getting older (going 38 ahhhhh) I must be very careful with my diet coz I believe that too much fat can cause a lot of disease and it is hard to 'porma kaya' (one of my sickness, sale, porma, shoes he he he). Dad out there, you don't need an expensive thing like those we see in gym. What you need is just dumbells, time and patience. If you have enough money (around Euro 100) then buy a stationary bike. In just a matter of 2 months, I lost 5 kilos and really love the result and actually hate it also. How to reduce 5 kilos in just a matter of 2 mos? The tips are here :

Exercise:

1. MWF (Mon, Wed, Fri) - 15 minutes biking (stationary bike) & 3 x 30 counts sit-ups
2. TTHS (Tue, Thu, Sat) - 15 minutes dumbells & 3 x 30 counts sit-ups

Food:

Breakfast - 1 glass of milk or coffee with milk
1 Sandwich(just put bacon or spread fruit jam)

Lunch & Dinner - avoid too much rice or carbohydrates intake. And don't eat too full. I eat everything but a little of something. Tip : 'Eat everything but not lamun' (he he he)

Just do it for 2 mos. and I assure that your friends will notice the difference. But in my case as I've said before, I hate the result coz my friend told me that I am 'pangit pag payat' coz my face gets too long (ang gulo he he he).

what will happen to me!?

I guess if you have only 1 kid at home, it could be sometimes boring. Having M and listening to his side comments could make somebody crazy. Last summer while sitting outside at the terrace and eating our favorite ice cream, my wife saw a mosquito at J's feet most probably enjoying sucking the sweet & innocent blood of my son. B (my wife) quickly spank J's feet and fortunately killed the bloody mosquito. 'Lamok!!' (pak) 'Ang daming dugo' (Mosquito! It has lots of blood in it!) J said. 'Anung mangyayari sa akin!?' 'Waaaa!' (Diring-diri na sigaw ni J) (What will happen to me, J asked in disgust) 'Mamatay ka na Kuya' alang prenong sagut ni M (You will die kuya, M's instant reply). Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. We all really laughed! Can a mosquito kill a human being? How dangerous are mosquitoes to our kids, to our health or even to our dog?
This is what I found from Healthbeat

While most mosquitoes are merely nuisances, some can transmit serious diseases such as encephalitis and malaria in humans and heartworm disease in dogs. There are two common mosquitoes, floodwater & vector.

Floodwater mosquitoes deposit their eggs singly in low-lying areas that will be flooded later. Under normal summer temperatures, large numbers of biting mosquitoes will emerge about two weeks after heavy rains and can be a major nuisance problem for several weeks. A vicious biter, this mosquito will commonly fly 10 or more miles from where they hatch, particularly along prevailing winds. Floodwater mosquitoes have not been significant disease carriers.

Vector mosquitoes carry diseases and lay their eggs in stagnant ditches and sewage treatment ponds or water in treeholes, old tires, clogged gutters, old tin cans and anything else that will hold water. Eggs are laid on or just above the water surface, where they usually hatch within two to three days.

Do all mosquitoes carry disease?

Floodwater mosquitoes are not major vectors of human disease, but they do transmit heartworm disease in dogs, as do Culex mosquitoes. The worms live and reproduce in the heart and pulmonary vessels and can severely weaken or kill the dog. Although difficult to treat, the disease is easily prevented by medication prescribed by a veterinarian.

The most common human illness carried by mosquitoes is encephalitis. This inflammation of the brain is caused by viruses and the disease can range from mild to severe. Severe symptoms include rapid onset of severe headaches, high fever and mental disturbances, such as confusion, irritability, tremors, stupor and coma. Severe cases sometimes end in death or with survivors suffering permanent physical and mental disabilities.

What is the best way to reduce populations of mosquitoes?

The first and best defense against these pests and the illnesses they may carry is to eliminate the places where they breed. Here are a few suggestions:

- Remove or empty water in old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, bottles or other places where mosquitoes might breed. Be sure to check clogged gutters and flat roofs that may have poor drainage. Make sure cisterns, cesspools, septic tanks, fire barrels, rain barrels and trash containers are covered tightly with a lid or with 16-mesh screen.

- Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use. Unused swimming pools should be covered or drained during the mosquito season. (Note: If you choose to drain your pool, be sure the hydrostatic relief valve is open in order to keep it from floating out of the ground if the water table rises.)

- Change the water in bird baths and plant pots or drip trays at least once each week.

- Store boats covered or upside down, or remove rainwater weekly.

- Empty your pet's water bowl daily.

- Level the ground around your home so water can run off and not collect in low spots. Fill in holes or depressions near your home that accumulate water.

- Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water.

- If you have an ornamental water garden, stock it with mosquito-eating fish (e.g., minnows, "mosquito fish," or goldfish). They eat mosquito larvae.

- Keep weeds and tall grass cut short; adult mosquitoes look for these shady places to rest during the hot daylight hours.

-Use a flyswatter or household spray to kill mosquitoes, flies or other insects that get into buildings. Spray shrubbery and high weeds to kill adult insects. (Check the insecticide label to make the sure the spray will not damage flowers or ornamental plants.)

- Small impoundments of water can be treated for mosquito larvae with "Bti," a bacterial insecticide. Many hardware stores carry doughnut-shaped Bti briquets (Mosquito Dunks R) for this purpose. Be sure to follow the insecticide label directions exactly.

- Some mosquito control methods are not very effective. Bug zappers are not effective in controlling biting mosquitoes. Various birds and bats will eat mosquitoes, but there is little scientific evidence that this reduces mosquitoes around homes.

- Community-wide mosquito abatement efforts can be quite effective if they are conducted as part of an integrated pest management program. This includes monitoring and draining or treating areas where mosquitoes breed — such as street catch basins, occasionally flooded marshes, river backwater areas, swamps and other low-lying areas.

How can people protect themselves from mosquito bites?

- Avoid places and times when mosquitoes bite. Generally, the peak biting periods occur just before and after sunset and again just before dawn. Each species, however, has its own peak period of biting.

- Be sure door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair.

- Wear appropriate clothing. Long-sleeved tops and long pants made of tightly woven materials keep mosquitoes away from the skin. Be sure, too, that your clothing is light colored. Keep trouser legs tucked into boots or socks.

- Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies any time.

- When it is necessary to be outdoors, apply insect repellent as indicated on the repellent label. The more DEET a product contains, the longer the repellant can protect against mosquito bites. However, concentrations higher than 50 percent do not increase the length of protection. For most situations, 10 percent to 25 percent DEET is adequate. Apply repellents to clothes whenever possible; apply sparingly to exposed skin if label permits. Consult a physician before using repellents on young children.
